Today, The Nicky was thrilled to host Dr. Eamonn O'Neil DL, the current High Sheriff of Greater Manchester. During his visit, he had the opportunity to meet our members and tour the centre's facilities.
Dr .O'Neil was warmly greeted by our CEO, David Delew, who guided him through various activity rooms including the Art Studio, Reminiscence Room, games room, and computer room. The High Sheriff showed particular interest in the armchair yoga session, where he watched our members participate with enthusiasm.
David Delew highlighted the unique circumstances surrounding Dr. O'Neil's tenure. Not only is it unusual for someone to serve two one-year terms as High Sheriff (his previous term was in 2020), but Dr. O'Neil was also appointed by two different Monarchs: Her Majesty The Queen in 2020 and King Charles III in 2024.
Addressing our members, Dr. O'Neil briefly explained the role of the High Sheriff and expressed his joy in visiting community groups like The Nicky. He noted how rewarding it is to witness firsthand how organisations like ours combat loneliness. Dr. O'Neil praised the activities and facilities he saw, including the assisted bathing services, hairdressers, and the talking newspapers recording studio.
After lunch, the High Sheriff took the time to meet many of our members, including the adorable 101-years-young Eileen Sommers who shared stories of her childhood.
